about

Melbourne/Naarm based hip hop artist Requiem has swapped his hoody for an astronaut suit. After years of creating critically acclaimed music, his latest release is a song about love, loss and travelling to a new dimension through a black hole.

Inspired by the sci-fi cinema of Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey and Nolan’s Interstellar, and the temporary nature of relationships, Transient tells the tale of an astronaut’s existential thoughts as they’re spaghettified in a supermassive black hole somewhere in deep space.

The new single features the other-worldly harmonies of Alice Springs/Mparntwe based award-winning producer/songwriter Resin Moon, aka Dave Crowe. Transient sees the pair reunite for the first time since collaborating on love letter to the Northern Territory, Louvres. Backing Resin Moon’s meditative and moody vocals and Requiem’s reflective raps is the brooding production of Sydney/Gadigal Country based beatmaker HFNR, aka Hugh Lake, who previously worked on Requiem’s trap fuelled banger Jean Luc and has produced hits for PANIA, Zia Jade and Stan Walker among others.

Requiem says Transient came from his keen interest in the infinite and unknown universe, as well as his time living in Darwin, NT, where friendships were often short lived due to the constant movement of its inhabitants.

“After I made an album about day to day life on earth, I wanted to set my sights on the great expanse of space. I loved living in the Top End, but it has a transient population, and friends often moved elsewhere after a while, myself included, as I moved back to Melbourne after six years,” he said.

“Life itself is transient too, we’re here for a short time then we’re gone, so the message with this song is to enjoy each moment, as I say in the song: one plate life, saviour the taste.”

lyrics

[Introduction: Resin Moon]
Suspended in time…

[Verse 1: Requiem]

Lost adrift, out of orbit
Oxygen low, slow down my talking
Lots of chat, it’s all internal
Won’t survive, guess that’ll learn you
Mind races, I drift away-from-the-ship
Galaxy vast, I remain-as-a-blip
Knew I’d die, no-way-it’s-like-this
Curious drug, I gave-away-to-my-hit
Floating away light years from home
Nothing special about dying alone
Helmet a fog, I steady my breath
Every moment time closer to death
True for us in earth or in space
Limited time after birth you’re erased
One plate life, saviour the taste
Near horizon, fear falls from my face

[Chorus: Resin Moon]

Suspended in time
Now and again
Waiting in line
Is it the start of the end?
Suspended in time
Now and again
Waiting in line
Is it the start of the end?
The end
The start or the end
Is it the start or the end?
The start or the end
Is it at start or the end?

[Verse 2: Requiem]

Sitting at the departure lounge
Who’s next to be departing now?
Another friend takes another bow
So good when it started out
Why say goodbye to those that love me?
Fight the future like David Duchovny
Holes in my heart, tear at textiles
Just smile, add to my X-Files
Taken away by gravity’s pull
Decisions I made replay-in-my-skull
Anxious brain in-sati-able
Faith remains the greatest-of-all
Making a point or saying it loud?
Smartphone more like a haunted house
Dogged by the past, a stalking hound
Surrounded by silence, not making a sound

[Chorus: Resin Moon]

Suspended in time
Now and again
Waiting in line
Is it the start of the end?
Suspended in time
Now and again
Waiting in line
Is it the start of the end?
The end
The start or the end
Is it the start or the end?
The start or the end
Is it at start or the end?

[Verse 3: Requiem]

Age two decades in two seconds
Time dilates but I’m wide awake
In a dying star truth beckons
The further I go the more I break
Spaghettify, turn into noodles
This is a ride, the journey is brutal
I’m gonna die, not what I’m used to
See you on the other side – toodles
At the horizon, what an event
Hope next to heaven I’m sent
If God’s listening I hereby repent
Past singularity I suddenly went
Patterns, extra-terrestrial beams
Transient multi-dimensional beings
Body dust, mind melted icecream
You won’t believe just what I have seen
…wow.
